Building a Useful Reef Aquarium Cleanup Crew

Marine invertebrates bring movement to a reef aquarium, and some help manage leftover food or algae. A cleanup crew is not a substitute for maintenance. The right mix depends on tank size, food, substrate, and existing livestock. Research each species first.

Match Invertebrates to Their Job

Different snails graze on different surfaces, while some shrimp scavenge or interact with other livestock. Check adult size, dietary needs, and whether a species suits your tank mates. Avoid adding a large group at once; limited natural food may not support them. Choose animals for a clear purpose, not appearance alone. Ask about care before buying.

Watch and Maintain Balance

Observe whether invertebrates are active and finding food, and supplement only when appropriate. Provide stable salinity and hiding places, and remove uneaten food before it affects water quality. If algae returns, review nutrients, lighting, and husbandry instead of expecting animals to solve everything. A balanced reef depends on consistent care and realistic stocking.
